about

I spent a year studying and composing at King's College, London, a ways back. The building I probably spent the most time in was Somerset House, just down the river and across the bridge from where I lived in Southwark.

Monet in Greyscale is about the feeling of my daily foggy morning walks along the south bank of the River Thames.

You might recognize the music from my first string quartet, from 2009. Monet in Greyscale began life as the third and final movement. The full string quartet version has an out-of-nowhere non sequitur of an ending, though, which I think is effective in context but jarring and unnecessary when the movement is played by itself.

In an effort to have the best of both worlds, I sliced off that ending and gave the piece a new title, more reflective of the feeling that inspired it.
